In-Character Information

Name: Rene Randall
Game: Valkyria Chronicles 2
Canon Point: Postgame
Age and Birthday: 19, April 10th
Dorm: Yes please!
House: Gunner

Personality: Rene is generally cheerful and bubbly, but can be aggressive due to both being ferociously loyal to her friends as well as extremely competitive. If you're anything from an armored V2 pointing a missile at her classmates to someone hitting on her best friend, Rene will make it clear that this won't stand (potentially with a soccer ball to the face). But she's able to get along with people from any group, including those that society bars. She loves helping others, and due to her tomboy image, she keeps it a secret that she's doing everyone's laundry.

While she enjoys that image, she also hates when people judge her by it. She's strong, but in school it was used to insult her, with people calling her a brute and a beast. It bothers her more than she'll let on, publically brushing it off with a blush and a smile.

Her loyalty and friendliness can get her into trouble, especially when it comes to being friends with Darscens or other socially put-upon groups, as it puts her under the same judgement as her friends. Since she didn't grow up with that sort of abuse, it will usually shock her into stunned silence to hear it. Likewise, her overprotective streak often manifests as outright hostility, even mild violence (soccer ball KIIIIICK!). When she can't fulfill a promise to a friend or help them when they need it, it weighs heavily on her no matter the reason.

This "protection at any cost" aggressive attitude is what landed her in the collective of Class G, the outcast class of Lanseal where everyone who couldn't be sorted into other classes ended up. Her outgoing nature proved more of a boon than ever before, and she especially bonded with the domestic Raymond and "rough outlaw" Eric.

During her stay at Lanseal, she grew distant from her parents, and regrets it. She writes to them, but being on the move has made it difficult for her to receive replies.

Despite her want to help everyone around her, she makes a strong distinction between allies (or potential allies) and enemies. Because everyone in the Rebellion army had made the decision to be in it, she sees them as beyond what can be helped, and won't hesitate to strike or even kill them. She doesn't see this as a contradiction, and would view it as strange if anybody did.

Backstory: In 1937, the continent entered the Second Europan War! Add onto this that the nation of Gallia was also embroiled in a bitter civil war, between the ruling house of Randgriz and the noble house of Gassenarl, over the revelation that the Randgriz archduchess was of denigrated Darscen blood.

Rene is from Gallia, and entered the military academy Lanseal, hoping to help not only Gallia, but the Darscen people, who were both targeted by the enemy as well as discriminated against in Gallia itself.

While not a Darscen herself, Rene's best friend Magari is. Magari had cared for Rene through an illness in their youth, and Rene has become very protective of Magari, going so far as to fight off boys who flirt with her.

Her physical strength and high mobility make Rene a natural Lancer, a class armed with rocket launchers. At the beginning of her attendance, she found it difficult to act in combat, the reality of the war impossible to overcome, but with help from her friends, her maternal instinct took over, giving her the ability to unshakingly fight for them.

Because both aggressive Rene and shy Magari couldn't be sorted into the more orderly classes, they were assigned to Class G, the wild cards of the school. Class G was generally looked down upon, but unbeknownst to any of the students, they were secretly being monitored for their untapped and unclassified potential.

She was chosen to fight against the leader of the enemy army, and managed to strike the final blow with help from Magari's morale boosts. But even though the ragtag class had brought peace to Gallia, Lanseal ended up closing anyway.

After graduation, Magari went away to study journalism, while Rene had an eye for starting her own business. Gallia didn't have any laundry businesses, after all. But before doing that, she figured she'd test her people skills on something other than a battle or soccer field. Time to head to this faraway school!

But...was it even a school any more? By the time she got there, she wasn't sure. Oh well, it would work!

Anything Else?: She's really good at soccer. Really good. She's a lancer for a reason--her aim is incredible. Appearance-wise she can occasionally be mistaken for a boy (see personality section) but is generally ok with that unless it comes packaged with an insult. She loves butter candies and playing in the snow as well!

1st Person sample: Attention citizens! Lancer Rene Randall, signing in as your new resident! I hope we can all be friends!

Boy, this place is a lot different than I heard it was. Did you guys used to be a school? I was all set to sign up to be a home ec teacher. But I'll teach you anyway! Laundry is an important life skill. I'll also show you how to take care of your weapons so they stay safe and in working condition. And a little cooking, I guess.

I'm always open to talk to, and if you play soccer, I've always got time for pickup games!

Wow, my next letter to Magari will be amazing!

3rd person sample: That stadium was really incredible. Rene had gone through her fourth consecutive round of Break the Targets and was taking a breather to reload and look around. This was something even ragnite technology couldn't accomplish, at least not yet.

Of course, Gallia was trying to get away from its dependence on ragnite, but it was a gradual process. Maybe she could send some of this information back.

Nah, she didn't want to have that much of an impact again. Being part of Class G was enough, and she didn't like the attention.

She hit a random button, one marked "stage hazard". It was still in Target mode, so what could go wrong?

A bunch of masked figures on go-karts, that's what could go wrong. And they were all headed right for her.

"Eep," she eeped, and then smiled, hauling her lance over her shoulder again. "All right, moving targets! Now we're talking!"
